The Trump administration plans to introduce new federal student loan limits from July 2026, capping graduate borrowing at $20,500 annually and professional programmes at $50,000 per year. Graduate PLUS loans will be eliminated. While officials aim to curb debt and tuition growth, critics warn the changes could limit access to essential fields like nursing, social work, and mental health, affecting equity and workforce supply.
