Willamette and Pacific universities announce merger to form Oregon’s largest private college

Willamette University and Pacific University have announced plans to merge, forming Oregon’s largest private university, tentatively called the University of the Northwest. The merger will combine undergraduate and graduate programmes across multiple campuses, serving over 6,000 students. Officials said the consolidation aims to expand career pathways, strengthen academic offerings, and create a regional workforce hub. Both universities emphasised that the move is strategic, not financially driven, and could be operational by summer 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
